Types of Scholarships/Fellowships/Assistantship
· University Funded Scholarship: In this scheme, you have to apply to University. Once you get admitted, they will rank the selected candidates and provide scholarships based on your ranking among the selected candidates. Just, you need to consider scholarships while filling application forms. It is most common in the USA/Canada/Australia/China etc. In this type, you have to apply for university, if the university has funding they will provide you full scholarship/partial scholarship/ nothing depending on your profile.
· External/Government Funded Scholarship: In this scheme, you will apply for scholarship directly. Sometimes the scholarship will be directly related to the university. And sometimes you have to mention your desired university in an application form like Turkiye Burslari Scholarship/Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship. In this case, you don’t need to apply for university in most cases but in some cases, it might be. Therefore, it is always a must to explore the website of that scholarship for accurate information.
· Professor/Department Funded Scholarships: It is most common in South Korean/USA etc.
Note: Generally, you don’t need any extra documents for scholarships. Sometimes, they might ask for a letter explaining why you need a scholarship and how will this scholarship help to achieve your goals.
How does the university provide admit and scholarship to students?
The university assigns marks/points for each of the documents listed in the previous post. Suppose that the university assigns points/marks for CPI, points for TOEFL points for SOP/LOR and similar. Let's assume that the total points/marks the university has assigned are 100. Let us say that the university has decided to admit 100 students this year for 2020, 20 full scholarships, 50 partial scholarships for international students So, top 20 students with high marks/points will be admitted with full scholarships, 50 students will get partial scholarships and remaining students will get tuition waiver/nothing. This is how the university provides admit and scholarship.
Notes: If you have low CPI, weak LOR, etc, then compensate it with others like strong SOP/ TOEFL/IELTS/GRE Scores but keep in mind one thing that which one is more important than others for different countries. You will know it by your seniors who have studied or studying there.
You will never know the data on how many students will be admitted by the university they never disclose it. It is just an example.
When Should We Apply for Abroad University?
Read it and watch the video for more clarification. It is a really very important factor which we usually ignore.
The most crucial part of getting admission is Deadline or Timeline. When should I apply?
In India, if we want to take admission to any university, we fill the application form in Jan/Feb, etc, then the entrance exam happens after 1/2/3 month and Classes start in July/August.
But the scenario is different for Abroad Universities because you need to spend lots of time on VISA if you get admitted to your desired university.
Generally speaking, you have to apply before 1 year. You heard 1 year. Yes, it is. Means if you want to continue your MS/PhD studies in September 2021, then you must apply by November/December to February. It varies from University to University. But, almost you will not have left any university if you didn’t apply till the end of February. February is last. You have to target for November.
• Some universities fix their deadline. Apply within this date. After that University will start the admission procedure and will give you an application decision that you are accepted or rejected. E.g, Let the deadline for university XYZ is 1st January. Then you can apply till that date. After that University will process your application. Mostly Asian Universities do this.
• In another case, the university opened its application portal in August/September and processed applications till the end of December/January/February (you have to find). Apply as early as possible. When you apply early, you will have greater chances of admission as well as scholarship because they process applications as they receive them. If you are late then your chances will be low. You will not get a scholarship or even admission because funding is limited.
Apart from that when you apply early, you will get a VISA easily otherwise lots of students face difficulty in the last time.
Note: Due to this, all the documents must be ready 8-10 months before your bachelor completion. E.g. 30th September/October of 2020 if you are applying for September 2021.
So, if you are a fresher they will make a decision on admission till the 6th-semester mark sheet along with all the documents.
